UDC Claims First Victory of the Season with 72-66 Victory over Goldey-Beacom

Wilmington, DE- The University of the District of Columbia's Women's Basketball team picked up their first win of the season with a 72-66 victory over Goldey- Beacom on their home court. Junior guard Maya Thomas led the Firebirds with a season high 24 points.

The Firebirds were led offensively by Thomas and Freshman guard Latavia Jackson. Jackson, who made the ECC honor roll for her performance last week, erupted the stat sheet with 23 points and 13 rebounds. 

The first quarter tipped off with a shot by Thomas made at the three-point line to give the Firebirds an early lead. Jackson and Thomas went head to head with the Lightnings scoring 19 out of the 24 points the Firebirds put up in the first quarter. The second quarter saw Jackson going a perfect 4-4 at the free throw line but the Firebirds falling short after being outscored by the Lightnings 17-10.

Thomas took lead in the third quarter leading not only her team but the field with 12 points going 4-7 at the three-point line. UDC was also able to keep Goldey-Beacom to a 27 shot percentage from the field and regain lead 51-47 going into the last quarter. The final stretch of the game saw Freshman guard Halia Ellis taking charge leading the firebirds with six points, going 4-6 at the free throw line. The Lightnings took advantage of a series of missed shots by the Firebirds to take on the lead 54-52 at the 6:46 mark, which was short lived after a made layup by Mia Boyd evened the score. 

Dana Harrington's made lay up at 5:52 put the Firebirds back in the lead, which they rode out to victory.

The Firebirds (1-2) will host their first home game of the season on Saturday, November 16 at 1:00PM at the brand new UDC Gym.
