Firebirds showed up and showed out with a victory over Queens college on their senior night season finale!

Washington, DC-The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team fought their way to a 66-64 Victory over Queens College in their season finale on March 2nd.

Led by Senior Guard Natasha Roy, who closed out her career here at UDC with 23 points and 6 assists, UDC took an early lead in the first quarter with a 22-10, leaving Queens to play catch up in the second and third quarters. With a tremendous help from Lakeisha Officer, who lead the knights in a career high 25 points, Queens was able to close the gap and tie the firebirds with 52 points heading into the fourth quarter. The next few minutes commenced a game of tug of war as queens gained the lead following a field goal by Lucy Tougas, which was then short lived, after Roy hit a three-pointer that would put the firebirds in the lead and ultimately secure them the victory.

Sophomore guard Maya Thomas was the second leading scorer for the firebirds with 14 points, followed by Danielle Harrington with 9 points and Tyra Coombs with 7 points. Coombs also lead the team with 7 rebounds. The number 5 seemed to be the lucky number last night for seniors Roy, Albert and Lloyd as they each contributed 5 rebounds respectively.

The Firebirds ended their season with a 10-18 overall record, and a 7-11 record in the East Coast Conference competition. This is a significant improvement from their records from the 2017-2018 season where they finished 4-24 overall and 2-16 in conference play.

"It was great to send the seniors out with a win. They were instrumental in building a base for the program" said Head Coach John Nakpodia. "I loved the growth our team showed this season and I look forward to taking another step in the right direction next season."
