Firebirds ECC Championship Bid Takes a Hit

WASHINGTON, DC – On Feb. 22nd The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team was led by senior guard Mia-Alexis Lloyd, who scored 13 points in a 70-50 lost to Roberts Wesleyan. Sophomore guard Maya Thomas added 10 points all in the second half.

The Red Hawks were led by Emily Miller who finished with a double-double of 25 points and 12 rebounds.  The Firebirds were active on defense causing 19 turnovers and coming away with eight steals. Despite the advantage in points off turnovers the Firebirds fell to the Red Hawks behind shooting struggles at 31 percent from the field. The Red Hawks dominated the backboard holding a 45-21 advantage in rebounds.

On Feb. 24th The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team lost a tough game 70-60 to Daemen in conference action at the UDC Gym.

The Firebirds played hard defensively causing 22 turnovers and scoring 20 points off turnovers.

The Wildcats 2nd in the ECC, dominated on the boards 40-28 and shot 48 percent from the field.

Senior guard Mia-Alexis Lloyd led the Firebirds with 18 points and went a perfect 12-12 from the free throw line.  Senior guard Natasha Roy also finished the game in the double figures scoring 12 points. In her first start since january 4th sophomore forward Danielle Harrington scored eight points, grabbed five rebound and had two steals. The Wildcats were led by Erin Egan, who scored 21 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. The Firebirds were excellent from the free throw line shooting 84 percent 16-19 from the line.

The Firebirds came out the gate aggressive with the offense spearheaded by Mia-Alexis Lloyd. She scored 10 points in the first quarter and went to the free throw line making all her shots. Her play allowed the Firebirds to finish the quarter with a 21-18 lead. In the second quarter both teams played great defense only a combine total of 23 points being scored in the quarter. The Wildcats came out of halftime on fire shooting 60 percent from the field while holding the Firebirds to just nine points.

Next up, the Firebirds will travel to Rockville Centre, NY for East Coast Conference play vs Molloy on Wednesday, February 27th at 1:00 p.m.
