Rebounding and Defense Key to Firebirds 75-70 Win Over Rivals

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team fought to an 75-70 East Coast Conference victory vs. Molloy College Wednesday afternoon at UDC Gym.

The Firebirds (6-10) used good defense and rebounding to power themselves to a win despite poor shooting.

The Lions (6-11), Struggled to get to the free throw line despite shooting 60 percent from the line.

The Firebirds had a balanced attack with four starters in double-figures. Junior guard Tyra Coombs played a excellent game scoring a season-high 22 points and 13 rebounds to earn her second straight double-double.

Senior guard Natasha Roy while running point scored 15 points, 12 which came from three-point range and four assists. Her fellow starting guard, Senior guard Mia-Alexis Lloyd was two rebounds away from a double-double earning 12 points and eight rebounds.

Senior forward Patricia Albert had her best game of the year scoring a season-high 16 points on 8-of-18 shooting, nine rebounds, and three assists. 14 of her 16 points came in the second half where UDC our scored Molloy 43-36.

The Firebirds went into second half down 34-32, but wasted no time taking the lead in 26 seconds and would keep the lead until 2:23 seconds were left on the clock in the fourth quarter. A layup from Tyra Coombs put the Firebirds back on top for good. The Firebirds outrebounded the Lions 50-37 despite the Lions shooting better from the field. The Lions were led by Ihnacinese Grady. She had 18 points, 10 assists, six steals, and four rebounds.

The Firebirds will travel to Flushing, NY for an ECC matchup vs Queens College on January 19th Tip-off is at 1:30 p.m.
