Hot Shooting Leads UDC to a 89-82 Victory

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team earned an 89-82 East Coast Conference victory vs. LIU Post Wednesday afternoon at UDC Gym.

The Firebirds (5-9) snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 2-2 in league play. They are 2-0 at home in conference games this season after Wednesday's win. The Pioneers, meanwhile, have now lost three of their last four, and fell to 11-4 overall.

The Pioneers ranked 3rd in the ECC, suffered their first conference lost of the season wednesday falling to (4-1) in league play.

The Firebirds had a balanced attack with four starters in double-figures. Senior guard Mia-Alexis Lloyd was perfect from the line (6-6) and would finish the game with 16 points, three rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

Senior guard Natasha Roy led UDC in scoring with 23 points, most of which came from a career best 7-of-10 from three-point range. She also got her teammates involved dishing out a career best six assists, four rebounds, and three steas. Her fellow starting guard, junior guard Tyra Coombs performed well finishing with 12 points and five rebounds.

Sophomore guard Maya Thomas, starting her first game as a Firebird led the team in scoring in the 2nd half with 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting and five rebounds. Reserve sophomore forward Mia Boyd added six points and three rebounds from the bench.

UDC outscored their opponents in 3-of-4 quarters and held preseason ECC player of the year Sasha Patterson to two points. The Firebirds were active on defense causing 19 turnovers and seven steals which helped hold off the Pioneers from making a comeback.

The Firebirds will look to stay undefeated at home in ECC play as they take on NYIT January 12th Tip-off is at 1 p.m.
