Firebirds Come Up Short Fall 74-68

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team lost a hard fought game 74-68 to Adelphi University in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at the UDC Gym.

The Firebirds (4-9) played hard defensively causing 19 turnovers and were in the game till the very end.

The Panthers (7-6), dominated on the boards leading to a 15-2 advantage in 2nd chance points

Three Firebird scorers finished the game with three players in double-figures and a offense spearheaded by great three point shooting display. After struggling from three last game the Firebirds bounced back shooting 11-of-22 from three.Senior guard Natasha Roy who finished with a game-high 22 points and 5 assists. Head Coach John Nakpodia received valuable contributions from all nine Firebird players who saw action today, as all nine grabbed at least one rebound and seven entered the scoring column.

Senior guard Natasha Roy led UDC in scoring with a game-high 22 points, 15 of which came on 5-of-8 shooting from behind the three point line. She also recorded five assists to keep the offense flowing.

Senior  guard Mia-Alexis Lloyd used a combination of slashing layups and floaters to to get 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting for the day.Junior guard Tyra Coombs was a three pointer and a rebound shy of a double-double, as she led the team in rebounding with nine boards and scored seven points.

Sophomore guard Maya Thomas was a spark plug of the bench coming in on fire in the first half leading the team in scoring on 3-of-6 shooting from behind the line. She would finish the game with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from three. Sophomore guard Dana Harrington and Sophomore forward Mia Boyd each registered a game-high two steals and three rebounds.

UDC despite being out-rebounded (45-26) keep the game close an kept the Panthers to 43-percent shooting

Adelphi took advantage of their chances at the free throw line shooting 73-percent (19-26) which ultimately helped them seal the game. The Panther shot 43-percent from the field and 41-percent from three. The Panthers were led by guard Niajah Morgan with a double-double  of 18 points and 10 rebounds to go with two assists. Guard Jess Camarda also helped her team with 17 points, five rebounds, and four assists.

Next up, the Firebirds enter back into East Coast Conference play with a home contest vs LIU Post on Wednesday, January 9th at 5:00 p.m.
