UDC Women’s Basketball Defeated by Bowie State in Crosstown Rivalry Game

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team was defeated by Division II crosstown rival Bowie State, 71-46 on Monday night at UDC Gym.

The Firebirds (3-6) were led by two double-figure scorers – senior guard Mia-Alexis Lloyd (18 points) and reserve sophomore guard Maya Thomas with 13. For Lloyd, this marks her 7th straight game scoring in double-figures, and Thomas reached double-figures for the 2nd time this season. Senior center Patricia Albert led the team in rebounding with seven, and she contributed seven points as well.

The Bulldogs (7-1) featured three double-figure scorers, including a game-high 20 points off the bench by Pere Alexander. The redshirt senior forward also collected 11 rebounds, four steals and two assists. Another reserve, Amel Duggins, scored 10 points, and starting forward Dynaisha Christian added 10 points and six rebounds. Starting forward Kyaja Williams was the game's leading rebounder with 12 boards.

Bowie State's bench out-scored UDC's, 36-13, the Bulldogs out-shot the Firebirds, 39-percent to 22-percent from the field, and they had a 45-39 rebounding advantage. Turnovers also hurt UDC, as Bowie State forced 28 Firebirds miscues and doubled-up UDC, 22-11 in points off turnovers.

Lloyd converted a layup nearly a minute into the game to force a 2-2 tie, but Bowie took control of the game with a 14-2 run over the next five-and-a-half minutes. Bowie would take a 22-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.

About mid-way through the 2nd quarter, Lloyd knocked down a pair of free-throws to cap a 4-0 Firebird burst and cut the deficit to nine, 30-21, but that is as close as they would get in the first half. BSU out-scored the hosts 9-3 the rest of the way, and led 39-24 at halftime.

UDC out-scored its guests 9-3 over the first six minutes of the 3rd quarter, once again closing the gap to nine, 43-33 on a Maya Thomas jump shot at the 4:13 mark, but the Bulldogs out-scored UDC 12-3 the rest of the quarter and led 54-36 heading into the final period.

Bowie State opened the 4th quarter on an 8-0 march, culminating in a three-point play by Pere, and with that run, the Bulldogs padded their lead to 62-36. The visitors would then cruise to a 25-point victory.

Next up, UDC will visit St. Rose College in Albany, NY on Wednesday, December 19th. Tip-off is at 1 p.m.
