Late Spark Not Enough in Firebirds’ 68-59 Loss at Lincoln

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA – The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team was defeated by host Lincoln University, 68-59 in non-regional play Wednesday night at Manuel Rivero Hall.

The Firebirds (1-2) were hampered by a slow start that saw them fall behind by a score of 21-5 at the end of the first quarter. Despite an impressive comeback attempt featuring a 12-1 surge in the 4th quarter, the Firebirds never got within seven points of the Lions. Lincoln improved to 2-1 with tonight's win.

Senior guard Mia-Alexis Lloyd led all scorers with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field and perfect 4-of-4 shooting from the foul line. She also collected five rebounds and three assists.

Lloyd's backcourt counterpart, senior Natasha Roy, added 12 points, and sophomore forward Danielle Harrington packed the stat sheet with seven points, a team-high seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Lincoln was led offensively by three scorers in double-figures, including Deja Reynolds and Shakira Edwards with 14 points apiece, and DeAshia Young with 13. Meanwhile, the Lions got a giant defensive lift from the outstanding hustle play of Alisia Machado, who grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds (16 defensive), collected three steals and blocked one shot.

UDC had two more assists (10-8) and six fewer turnovers (29-23), and the Firebirds cashed in for 10 2nd chance points compared to Lincoln's two. Also, both teams were even in points on the floor with 48 apiece. The difference in the game came down to fouls and free throws, where UDC committed five more personal fouls (27-22) and sank nine fewer free-throws (20-11).

Next up, UDC will host a rematch against Holy Family University during UDC Homecoming Week on Saturday, November 17th at 1 p.m.
