Firebirds Fall to Holy Family in Season Opener

WILMINGTON, DE – The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team was defeated, 88-42, by Holy Family University in both teams' season opener and the first game of the Tip Off Classic hosted by Wilmington University.

The Firebirds (0-1) were led offensively by guards Danielle Harrington and Natasha Roy, who scored 10 points apiece. Guard Dana Harrington led the team with a game-high nine rebounds.

Holy Family (1-0), a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), featured three scorers in double figures.  Forward Katie O'Hare had 20 points and four assists, guard Molly Masciantonio also scored 20 points to go with eight assists and two steals, and guard Casey Schweitzer added 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

O'Hare scored 11 of Holy Family's first 14 points to help the Tigers race out to an early 18-5 lead, and HFU never looked back. The Tigers led 25-12 at the end of the 1st quarter.

In the 2nd quarter, HFU went on a 16-3 surge to extend its lead to 41-15, and the Tigers took a comfortable, 45-21 lead into halftime.

The Firebirds kept battling in the 3rd quarter, out-scoring HFU, 17-15 in the period as six different players entered the scoring column, including Danielle Harrington with five points. They cut the deficit to 19 on a few different occasions, but never got any closer than that.

In the 4th quarter, Holy Family took complete control of the game, out-scoring UDC, 28-4. The Tigers, who never let up in the final period, would win by their largest margin of the night.

HFU out-shot UDC, 56-percent to 26-percent from the field and 54-percent to 19-percent from three-point range. The Tigers also more than tripled-up the Firebirds in assists, 26-8, and had five fewer turnovers (18-13).

UDC is back in action tomorrow afternoon vs. the tournament host, Wilmington University. Tip-off is at 2 p.m.
