Two Firebirds Earn East Coast Conference Basketball Honors

Washington, DC – After starting the basketball season with two wins, the University of the District of Columbia Men's and Women's Basketball Teams each had a player earn weekly conference awards.

On the women's side, junior guard Janelle Junior (Riverside, CA – La Sierra HS) earned East Coast Conference (ECC) Player of the Week Honors.  Junior led the Firebirds in their 86-51 season debut victory over Chestnut Hill College with 17 points on 7-9 shooting from the field.  She also was 3-4 from three point range while notching four rebounds, four assists, and four steals.

For the UDC men, senior guard Nigel Munson (Washington, DC – DeMatha HS) was named to the ECC Weekly Honor Roll.  Munson led the Firebirds in their season opening 83-72 victory over Alderson Broaddus College with 27 points.  Munson was 8-13 from the field, 10-10 from the foul line, and had 6 rebounds and 4 assists.

Both the UDC men's and women's teams notched victories to open up the season at home in the UDC Gym in the Sports Complex in front of more than 300 fans.  The double header was the tip-off event for a week of Homecoming festivities at UDC.

The District of Columbia Women's Basketball Team returns to action next Saturday, November 19th against Goldey-Beacom College at the AIC Classic at American International College in Springfield, MA.  The UDC Men's Basketball Team returns to action on Tuesday night at home against Elizabeth City State at 7:00 pm.
