INDIANAPOLIS – Eighth-year head coach Lester Butler, Jr. has the University of the District of Columbia women’s basketball team headed back to the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Tournament for the second time in his career. The Firebirds, who return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009, have earned a No. 8 seed in the 2012 East Regional Tournament.

Stacy Griffith had three layups during a frantic 15-5 Firebirds run, but No. 2 UDC came up just short, 63-61 against No. 3 STAC in the ECC semifinals.

FLUSHING, NY – The Firebirds used a 15-6 run in the final five minutes to cut an 11-point deficit to two, but two Bianca Kowgios free-throws sealed a St. Thomas Aquinas victory as the No. 3 Spartans eliminated the No. 2 University of the District of Columbia women’s basketball team with a 63-61 East Coast Conference Championship Tournament semifinal victory.

The women’s basketball team dropped out of the national top-25 but remain in 5th place in the East Region.

Lauren Brittingham had 11 points and nine assists.
