UDC Women Defeat USP, 40-37

 Washington, DC: February 18, 2010-In a low scoring contest, the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women's' Basketball Team defeated the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Devils, 40-37, tonight at the UDC Sports Complex. Junior center Lillian McGill (Sumter, SC) led the way with her 17th double double of the season scoring 13 points and pulling down 17 boards. McGill is ranked 6th in the country in rebounds among NCAA Division II schools, averaging 11.6rpg.

The game got off to a slow start with neither team able to capitalize on the large number of turnovers in the first half (UDC-12/USP-9). UDC shot 26 percent for the half to USP's 33 percent. The score was tied twice and the lead changed 7 times in the half.

The second half saw the game tied 5 times and 5 lead changes as turnover trouble continued for both sides. The teams had a combined total of 43 turnovers (UDC-19/USP-24).

UDC shot 32 percent (17-54) in field goals, 18 percent (2-11) from beyond the arc and 33 percent (4-12) from the charity stripe, for the game, to USP's 32 percent (13-41) from the field, 42 percent (5-12) from beyond the arc and 86 percent (6-7) from the charity stripe.

Junior guard Nicole Cooper (Fort Washington, MD) also reached double figures, scoring 10 points, including (2 for 6 three-pointers), grabbed 2 rebounds, dished out 1 assist and made 1 steal. Senior forward Tamara Watkins (Penns Grove, NJ) tallied 7 points, pulled down 3 boards, made 1 assist and 1 steal.

Kaitlin DuRoss led the Devils scoring with 13 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals, followed by Erin Chesnavich with 12 points, 9 boards, and 1 block. Melissa Rotz added 6 points, 4 boards, and 4 assists.

UDC (11-13) returns to the hard court at home on Sunday, February 21, at 2 p.m., for their final game of the season, hosting The Apprentice School. Three senior members of the team, who will be playing in their final game for the Firebirds, will be honored in a pre-game ceremony. Nicole Cooper, Tiffany Church and Tamara Watkins will end their collegiate playing careers with this game.
