UDC Downs Washington Adventist, 82-38

 Washington, DC: February 2, 2010-The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women's Basketball Team was busy at both ends of the court tonight as they scored 82 points and pulled down 33 defensive rebounds, while holding the Washington Adventist University Shock to 38 points at the UDC Sports Complex.  Junior center Lillian McGill (Sumter, SC) paced the Firebirds to the win with her 15th double double of the season, scoring 15 points, pulling down 16 boards, dishing out 5 assists and making 2 steals.

McGill, ranked 7th in the nation among NCAA Division II Schools in rebounds, is averaging 11.4 rebounds per game in the most recent rankings released by the NCAA. Senior guard Nicole Cooper (Fort Washington, MD) followed McGill in double figures tonight, scoring 14 points (4 for 8) three-pointers, dishing out 2 assists and making 1 steal. Cooper is currently ranked 65th in the nation in three-point field goal percentage (36.8).

Junior forward Tiffany Church (Norfolk, VA) also had double digit scoring, with 14 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block and 1 steal.  Senior forward Tamara Watkins (Penns Grove, NJ) recorded the first double double of her career, scoring 11 points, pulling down 10 rebounds, giving 2 assists and making 3 steals.

It was UDC all the way as they established an early lead and did not look back. They made a 15 -2 run early in the game and several similar ones to close out the first half with a margin of 18 points. The Firebirds shot 36 percent in the first half (15 for 42), 44 percent (4 for 9) from beyond the arc and 56 percent (5 of 9) from the charity stripe in the half.

The Firebirds extended their lead to as many as 49 points in the second half before the Shock trimmed it to 44 to end the game.  UDC shot 44 percent (31 for 70) for the game, 56 percent(9 for 16) from beyond the arc and 61 percent (11 of 18) from the charity stripe. Adventist shot 25 percent (14 for 56) from the field, 20 percent (3 for 15) from three-point range and 70 percent (7 of 10) from the free-throw line.

Erin Duffie was the only Adventist player in double figures, scoring 10 points and grabbing 4 rebounds. Krista Byrd scored 7 points and pulled down 3 boards.

UDC improved to 9-13 with this win, while Adventist dropped to 0-21. The Firebirds will see action again on February 10, at 5:30, at home, against the Apprentice School, in their second meeting of the season. UDC defeated Apprentice 72-59 in Newport News, Virginia on January 20.
