C. W. Post Defeats UDC 71-46

Washington, DC: January 2, 2009-- The C. W. Post College Pioneers defeated the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women's Basketball Team , 71-46, this afternoon during the 3rd Annual UDC New Year's Classic at the UDC Sports Complex.  Janea  Aiken led the Pioneers to the win with a 19 point scoring effort.

UDC came into the game flat, missing scoring opportunities and playing listlessly. Before they realized it, Post had built an 18 point lead  7 minutes into the first half. After falling so far behind the Firebirds found it difficult to make up the deficit, going into the break trailing 42-21.

Post shot 52 percent ( 16 for 31) from field goal range, 33 percent ( 4 for 12) from beyond the arc and 67 percent ( 6 of 9) from the free-throw line in the half. UDC shot only 33 percent ( 8 for 24) in field goals,  1 of 5  (20%) from beyond the arc and 4 of 8 (50%)  from the charity stripe.

The second half of the contest was much of the same as UDC fell even further behind.  Post built a 26 point lead with 1:20 remaining before ending the game with a 25 point margin.

In addition to Aiken, also in double figures for Post were Noel Pawlicki  with 16 points, and Felicia Joyner with 10.

Junior center Lillian McGill (Sumter, SC) was the only UDC player in double figures, scoring 16 points and grabbing 9 rebounds. Sophomore forward Stacy Griffith (Fredericksburg, VA) added 8 points and 5 rebounds and freshman guard Ty Abilla (Galloway, NJ) contributed 5 points and 2 rebounds.

The New Years Classic continues on Sunday, January 3,  for the Firebirds when they play West Virginia State University at 3 p.m. The Firebirds are now 4-9 for the season.
