Millersville Beats UDC, 69-33

Millersville, PA: November 20, 2009-Millersville University defeated the University of theDistrict of Columbia, 69-33, in women's basketball tonight in the Millersville Classic at the Pucillo Gymnasium in Millersville, Pennsylvania. Freshman guard Mashira Newman (Upper Dublin, PA) paced the Marauders to victory scoring 13 points and collecting 3 rebounds, while dishing out 2 assists.

It was a lackluster performance for the Firebirds of UDC, who shot only 26 (12-47) percent from the field, and 17 (1-6) percent from behind the arc. Junior forward Lillian McGill (Sumter, SC) was the only UDC player in double figures, posting a double double (2nd of season) of 10 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. The Firebirds did better at the charity stripe, making 62 (8-13) percent of their shots.

Millersville used an effective zone defense to keep UDC off balance and deny them good looks at the basket. After four ties and one lead change, Millersville broke it open during the first period to take a 26-16 lead into the half-time.

Millersville extended their lead with a 9-0 run early in the second period to make the score 35-16, then made another 11-0 run bringing the score to 47-18. It was all downhill from there for the Firebirds as they could not mount a comeback.

High scorers for Millersville in addition to Newman were senior guard Ashley Moyer (Cedar Crest, PA) with 11 points, and sophomore guard Sophia Waters (Norristown, PA) who scored 10 points. Sophomore guard Stacy Griffith (Fredericksburg, VA) was the second highest scorer for UDC with 7 points and junior guard Nicole Cooper (Fort Washington, MD) added 6.

UDC fell to 1-2 after this loss, but look to rebound on Saturday in the second round of the Millersville Classic when they take on West Chester University at 2 p.m.
