Indianapolis, Ind-- The University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebird Basketball Team has been included on the 2007-08 NCAA Division II Most Improved Basketball Team list. The Lady Firebirds ended the 2006-07 season with a 13-15 record.

Washington, DC--- Robin Williams, the team captain of the University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds Basketball Team, was named the recipient of the Reslyn W. Henley Memorial Award on May 5, 2008. The Reslyn W. Henley Memorial Award is presented annually by the “M” Club, in memory of Reslyn W. Henley, a graduate of the District of Columbia Teachers College, a UDC predecessor school. The “M” Club started as an athletics support organization for the District of Columbia Teachers College, and continues to operate in support of athletics at the University of the District of Columbia.

On Tuesday, April 15, 2008, the Board of Trustees of the University of the District of Columbia recognized the achievements of UDC student-athletes during the 2007-08 academic year. The Lady Firebirds Basketball Team was recognized for their outstanding performance on the basketball court, which resulted in them winning the Independent Schools Women’s National Basketball Championship in February of this year.

Washington, DC—University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds forward Lillian McGill, has been named to the Women’s Division II Bulletin’s 2008 All-Freshman Team. McGill, from Sumter, South Carolina, was among 10 national NCAA Division II players selected for this award. She averaged 13.4 points, 10.4 rebounds and 1.48 steals per game while shooting 50% from the floor during her freshman year. This was the second major award McGill has received this year. In March, she was named the Independents Collegiate Athletic Association Freshman (ICAA) of the Year and to ICAA First Team.

Butler, Jr., head coach of the University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds Basketball Team, has been named the 2008 Independents Collegiate Athletic Association Coach of the Year. Butler led the Lady Firebirds to a 21-8 season, and the 2008 Independent Schools National Basketball Championship.

Washington, DC: February 26, 2008—The University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds defeated the University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon, 82-54, to win the National Independent Schools Women’s Tournament tonight at the Physical Activities Center. A field of seven NCAA Division II Independent Schools, and one NAIA participated in the Tournament February 23-26, at UDC.

Edinboro, PA: February 21, 2008—It was an exciting finish to a hard fought contest as the University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds fell to the Edinboro University Lady Fighting Scotts, 60-59, tonight in Edinboro, Pennsylvania. Freshman forward Lillian McGill (Sumter, SC) led UDC in scoring with 15 points and 16 rebounds, her 17th double-double of the season.

Washington, DC: February 18, 2008—The Apprentice School Lady Builders paid their first visit to the University of the District of Columbia tonight to play the Lady Firebirds in basketball. Unfortunately, for them, UDC did a little dismantling instead of allowing the Builders to do much building. UDC also celebrated the completion of the collegiate basketball careers of four senior players during “Senior Night” festivities.Lady Firebird seniors Ashley Alexander, Eniola Bakare, Sylvia Kemp and Robin Williams played in their final regular season home game tonight.

Bowie, MD: February 14, 2008—Two University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds led the team to a, 49-48, win over the Bowie State University Lady Bulldogs, this afternoon in the A.C. Jordan Center, snapping their 10 game home win steak. Senior guard Ashley Alexander (Washington, DC) and sophomore point guard Nicole Cooper (Ft. Washington, MD) scored 12 points apiece to take the win and improve the UDC season record to 16-7.

Cheyney, PA: February 11, 2008—Senior Ashley Alexander (Washington, DC) led the University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds in scoring tonight against the Lady Wolves of Cheyney State University, getting 17 points and 7 rebounds, but it was not enough as Cheyney defeated them in overtime, 78-74. Cheney’s Lutfiyya Muhammad paced the Lady Wolves to the win with a game high 22 points, to give them their 8th victory of the season.

Butler, Jr., has collected his 50th career win since assuming the coaching mantel at the University. The milestone was reached on January 28, 2008, when the UDC Lady Firebirds defeated the Saint Andrews Lady Knights in Laurinburg, North Carolina. His UDC coaching record stands at 50-62.

Washington, DC: February 9, 2008—In an erratic game during which the teams had a combined 44 turnovers, the University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds defeated the Chowan University Lady Hawks, 50-43, at the Physical Activities Center this afternoon. The game was an annual observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Day, which focuses attention on the fact that breast cancer is the second leading cause of death for all women and the leading cause of death in women between the ages of 20 and 59.

Ettrick, VA: February 3, 2008—Although freshman forward Lillian McGill (Sumter, SC) grabbed a career and team high 18 rebounds, and got 12 points for her 10th double-double of the season, it was not enough, alone, to get the win, as the University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds fell to the Virginia State University Lady Trojans, 61-53, this afternoon in Ettrick, Virginia. VSU’s Eugenia Carson had a double-double of her own, with 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Lady Trojans to the win.
