Men’s Tennis Senior Day Enjoyed with, 6-3 Win Over St. Thomas Aquinas

BOYDS, MD – The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team competing in an outstanding senior day performance to beat East Region No. 7 St. Thomas Aquinas 6-3, in an East Coast Conference clash at Tennisplex, Germantown.

The Firebirds improved to 6-6 overall and 1-2 in ECC play. Whereas, their regionally ranked opponents fell to 10-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

UDC fell in the first doubles matchup in No. 3, where seniors Marco Feligioni and Ander Murillo lost 8-2 to Ferragut and Hasicevic. However, the nationally ranked pair of Rok Bozic and Diego Pinto struck back in a solid 8-5 win over Ljungberg and Taplin. Then, the new partnership of Alexis Baguelin and freshman Sebastian Mermersky defeated Aaron Stahl and Paul Voight for an 8-5 victory to take a 2-1 overall lead into singles.

The Spartans hit back first in singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Murillo at No. 5. However, an impressive show by Mermersky at No. 2 saw him take a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Stahl to give him his first win in UDC colors.

His performance was followed by wins at No's 6, 4, and 1. As Josip Marinic at No. 6 put in a class act with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Eddy de Abreu.

A tough battle at No. 4 saw Pinto come out on top in a three set thriller 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 to give the Firebirds the overall win and their first ECC win of the season. His win was followed up by the remarkable No. 1 Rok Bozic who was involved in another tight three set match against a talented freshman in Jakob Ljungberg to triumph 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.

To end the day, UDC lost at No.3 with Baguelin tangled in a tense contest with Andrew Ferragut to eventually lose 7-6, 7-6.

The Firebirds will be on the road next weekend as they face Daemen College, Friday, April 13th at 4:30PM.
