Firebirds Bounce Back to Win, 7-2 vs. Jefferson
PHILADELPHIA, PA – The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team were back to winning ways as they comfortably beat Jefferson, 7-2 Sunday afternoon at Abraham J. Salaman Courts.
UDC has now improved to 4-3 overall ahead of their East Coast Conference opener against rivals NYIT on Friday. Whereas, Jefferson out of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), lost today to fall to a 2-5 record.
The Firebirds were at the races today, as they took the first doubles match at No. 2 with Alexis Baguelin and Ander Murillo asserting an 8-2 victory over Atri and Sison. However, the Rams would pull one back at No. 3 doubles with an 8-5 win, and with No. 1 doubles determining who had the upper hand going into singles play, it was the dynamic pair of Rok Bozic and Diego Pinto to continue their unbeaten season who took an 8-5 win over Haedicke and Molina.
With the Firebirds having a slender advantage going into singles play, the lead was extended at No. 6 singles with Marco Feligioni securing a 6-1, 6-4 win over Joseph Sison. Senior Diego Pinto would be next to take another point after cruising to a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Joao Marcal at No. 4 to give UDC a 4-1 lead.
Although, Jefferson were not finished as they took No. 3 singles to hang on in this contest. But the in-form Rok Bozic was in unstoppable fashion to power his way to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Oskar Haedicke to stop any sort of Jefferson comeback. He would be followed by sophomore Josip Marinic who was involved in another battle at No. 5 to overcome his opponent Atri, 4-6, 7-6, 10-5.
Finishing the day off on a high was Alexis Baguelin at No. 2, as he grinded out a narrow tiebreak in the first set to see his way to victory in the 2nd to complete a 7-6, 6-2 win over Liviu Trifoi.
UDC will be looking for more of the same Friday, March 23rd, as they take on ECC foe NYIT at 10AM.
