CHARLESTON, WV – The upset-minded University of the District of Columbia men's soccer team was unable to keep pace with the host and No. 5 nationally-ranked, University of Charleston, as the Firebirds fell by a final score of 3-0 Wednesday afternoon at Schoenbaum Stadium.
UDC (4-7-1) kept it a 1-0 game through 75 minutes of action before surrendering two goals in the final 15 minutes of regulation. A superb defensive effort, spearheaded by backs Michael Agboola and Pablo Basarte, allowed UDC to stay within striking distance for much of the game, but, offensively, the Firebirds could only manage two shots, neither of which was on goal.
Charleston, the reigning NCAA Division II champion, improved to 11-0-2 with today's win – its 12th shutout this season out of 13 total games. The Golden Eagles extended their home win streak to 11 games going back to last season.
Freddy Tracey opened the scoring just before the 22-minute mark on a shot blasted off an assist by Danilo Dias. The Firebirds tried to quickly respond with a nice run immediately after the Golden Eagle goal, which resulted in a corner kick, but they came away empty on the opportunity.
UDC starting goalkeeper Milton Diaz did not have to face another shot on goal in the first half after Tracey's goal, as the Firebirds only trailed the No. 5 ranked team in the nation, 1-0 heading into halftime.
Neither team could generate much offense in the first 30 minutes of the closing half, but Charleston broke through for an insurance goal at the 75:08 mark. Gabriel Cabral scored UC's first penalty kick goal of the season to put the hosts up, 2-0 with just under 15 minutes remaining.
The Golden Eagles tacked on a 3rd goal by Javier Gonzalez in the 86th minute. The goal was assisted by David Achaerandio.
UDC will enter back into East Coast Conference play on Sat., Oct. 13 on the road at Roberts Wesleyan College. The Firebirds are currently 2-3 in league play with four of their five remaining regular season games in conference.
