Firebirds Comeback Bid Falls Short

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — The visiting University of the District of Columbia men's soccer team was defeated, 3-2 by NYIT in a East Coast Conference game on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at President's Stadium

 

The Firebirds (2-5-1, 0-2 ECC) led the game in shots (19-12) and corner kicks (8-2) but, fail to come away with the win. UDC started the game off with a strong attack. In the 2nd minute UDC had a chance to score when Raphael Pacano got behind the defence for a one on one with the goalkeeper Andrew Pereira. Three shots later and a open goal team save by NYIT the game remained scoreless.

 

The First goal of the game came from a header in the box by  NYIT's Bernd Schlüter who is currently tied as the East Coast Conference goal scoring leader with 8 goals. Bernd Schlüter would score again from a header in the box in the 28th minute to score both of NYIT's 1st half goals.

 

21 minutes into the second half the Firebirds got on the board when Salah Warid knocked the ball into the back of the net off a long assist from Gabriel Velluto bringing the score to 2-1. 6 minutes later UDC tied the score 2-2 as Pierre LaNoire scored his second goal of the season of a assist by Gabriel Torres. With 5 minute left in the game NYIT scored to make the final score 3-2.

 

Next up, UDC come home for their 2nd home game of the season vs East Coast Conference rival Molloy College  on Sun., Sept. 30 at 1:00 p.m.
