No. 16 Firebirds’ Comeback Falls Short in 2-1 Loss to Barton

RICHMOND, VA – The No. 16 nationally-ranked University of the District of Columbia men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to Barton College Wednesday night in a neutral site non-regional game at Richmond City Stadium.

The Firebirds (1-1-1) out-shot the Bulldogs, 9-5 and had a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks en-route to out-scoring them 1-0 in the 2nd half, but it was not enough to erase a 2-0 first half deficit.

Barton (2-0) took five of the first six shots of the night and raced out to a 2-0 lead just 31 minutes into the game. Tolly Beatson scored first for the Bulldogs in the 27th minute, followed by Ruben Mancio in the 31st minute.  UDC took the final three shots of the half but failed to get on the board before halftime.

Torres scored the Firebirds' lone goal of the night in the 57th minute. This was his third tally of the season – the first of which that did not come on a penalty kick. The All-American and Preseason ECC Player of the Year has scored a goal in all three games this season.

UDC continued to apply pressure offensively, putting three header shots on goal all to no avail. The Firebirds' last chance came in the final minute of regulation following a yellow card foul on Barton's Rafael Ribiero. UDC's Elvin Arbaiza took the indirect kick and fired a shot that was blocked by Bulldogs defenders, and defender Michael Agboola, playing all the way up in the box, collected the rebound and fired a shot that sailed high over the net.

The Firebirds will be back in action on Sat., Sept. 8 at Seton Hill University in Greensburg, PA. The start time has been moved back from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
