UDC Men’s Lacrosse Quick Start Secures The Season’s First Victory 16-12

Elkins, West Virginia – Coming off a its first lost in its first home game of the season, Men's Lacrosse traveled to Elkins, West Virginia to compete against Davis & Elkins College in the first match-up of the ECC-GMAC Challenge Cup

The visiting Firebirds were able to get off to a quick start when Senior Midfielder Syrrus Nash connected with Sophomore Midfielder Turner Alison in the game's first extra man opportunity. The Firebirds followed this goal with the game's next two goals of the quarter. Junior Attackman Alan Singleton created both these scoring opportunities; producing a goal followed by an assist to Junior Midfielder Edmund Taylor.

The home team Senators tallied their first goal of the season when Junior Attackman Matt O'Dwyer placed a neatly tucked pass behind the visiting team's defense to an open Freshman Midfielder George Sfarnas. By the end of the first quarter each team tallied an additional two goals. Positioning the Firebirds ahead by a 5-3 count. It seems the Firebirds then begin to push harder in the second and third quarters. During these 30 minutes the team outscored its opponent 9-3. Of note, Freshman Attackman Jeffrey Vo scored all four of his points during the Firebirds run.  During the same two quarters, the team's defense, led by Senior Goalie Nikolas Lund-Murray, withstood 22 shots, yielding only 3 goals. The team effort illustrated during the first three quarters dissipated in the final frame. In the fourth quarter the Firebirds committed 3 penalties, lost 6 of their 20 turnovers, and were outshot by the Senators 14-5. As a result the home team scored 6 goals this quarter. In the end, UDC Firebirds Men's Lacrosse was led by a number of players. The play of Turner Alison stood out. The Midfielder scored three goals using his long pole, picked up 5 groundballs, and caused 2 turnovers in 60 minutes of play. For his efforts, Turner received the team's game ball.

The University of the District of Columbia Men's Lacrosse team travels to play Wilmington University, Wednesday February 27th.  The game is scheduled for a 2pm start.
