Firebirds Dominate to Win 16-7 Against Dominican

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia men's lacrosse team claimed a 16-7 victory against regional opponents Dominican College (N.Y.) on a cold Wednesday afternoon at the UDC Sports Complex.
The Firebirds (5-1) were led by standout freshman attack Turner Allison who scored five impressive goals and added one assist on the day. Senior LaRon Hinton chipped in with a striking four goals and two assists to help give the District of Columbia the win. Senior Teilen Celentano produced another consistent performance in face-offs winning 20-of-25 along with a game-high 14 ground balls, and one goal.
The defense was also outstanding conceding seven goals with two of those coming in the 3rd and 4th quarters. They were led by sophomore goalie Nikolas Lund-Murray saving 10 of 17 shots, now making him top of the East Coast Conference in saves and 2nd in saves percentage.
Dominican College was steered by Christian Hernandez who scored two goals and one assist. He was supported by senior midfielder Chris Heegan with two goals.
In the beginning, the Firebirds took the lead with junior attack Zach Hart scoring on an assist by sophomore Edmund Taylor. A quick response by Dominican evened l the game, however, superb play in the 1st quarter saw UDC score seven consecutive goals to take a lead of 8-2 going into the 2nd quarter.
The 2nd and 3rd quarter saw less action in terms of goals as both teams only scored four goals each after an explosive 1st quarter start by the Firebirds. Dominican caused a nervy moment for UDC as they managed to bring the game to 10-6. Allison had other plans as he scored four successive goals to give the home side breathing space.
With the score at 14-6 in the last quarter, the game was in the Firebirds control and with care they saw the game out impressively to end as 16-7 winners.
The District of Columbia won in most battles on the day, winning 20 turnovers to the opponents 11, going 28-17 on ground balls, and 35-29 on shots.
Next, UDC will play their first East Coast Conference game this Saturday against Molloy College in a doubleheader along with the women's lacrosse, starting at 12PM at the UDC Sports Complex.
