Firebirds steam past Wildcats for 3rd straight win

Newark, DE- The University of the District of Columbia's men's lacrosse team took down the Wilmington Wildcats for their 3rd straight team win, with the Firebirds beating them 14-7 on Tuesday evening.

The Firebirds (3-0) have kept the steam roll going with another victory. UDC has averaged 17.33 goals per game, 5 goals more than last season's goal average in just 3 games. Today's win was led by senior midfielder LaRon Hinton and junior midfielder Tyler mace both with four goals and two assists for a combined 14 points total. Other notable performances included senior midfielder Teilen Celentano with two goals and one assist, sophomore attackman Alan Singleton with 2 goals, junior attackman Edmund Taylor with 2 goals and freshman attackman Turner Allison with one goal and one assist. At the face-off senior midfielder Teilen Celentano went (16-of-22), also contributing to the face-off Junior Midfielder Tyler Mace went (2-of-3).

On defense Junior Goalkeeper Nikolas Lund-Murray saved (17-of-24) shots. Sophomore Defender Garrin Adolphe had a game high of four ground balls and two caused turnovers, freshman defenseman Xavier Harris also had a game high of three groundballs and three caused turnovers and sophomore defensemen Connor Mosby had two groundballs and three caused turnovers.

The Wilmington Wildcats (0-1) put up a fight but fell to the Firebirds. Their offensive leaders were freshman midfielder Josh Burley with three goals and one assist, junior attackman Corey Melvin with 3 goals and junior midfielder Chris Smith with one goal and two assists.

UDC set the pace of the game with freshman attackman Turner Allison scoring the first goal of the game unassisted at the 8:33 minute mark. Later senior midfielder LaRon Hinton scored unassisted as well for the Firebirds to 2-1 at the end of the first quarter. At the start of the second quarter the Firebirds got into their groove resulting in junior midfielder Tyler Mace with an assist from LaRon Hinton to score two minutes into the second quarter. Sophomore attackman Alan Singleton put his name on the board with goal late in the second quarter. Wilmington answered back with two goals from freshman Josh Burley and a goal from junior Chris Smith.  The Firebirds took off in the second half closing the game out 15-7.

 

The Firebirds outshot the Wildcats 49-40, but beat the Firebirds in the groundball battle 28-25.

 

On Friday, March 2nd Firebirds will face Davis & Elkins Senators on Cooper Field at Georgetown University.  The game begins at 7pm.
