Head Lacrosse Coach Scott Urick and Associate AD Matt Rienzo Host Lacrosse Clinic at UDC Field
WASHINGTON, DC – Head lacrosse coach Scott Urick and Associate Athletic Director Matt Rienzo hosted The School Without Walls boys lacrosse team for an instructional clinic at University of the District of Columbia Field on Wednesday evening.
Urick and Rienzo, both former coaches at Georgetown University, ran a clinic that featured drills stressing fundamentals such as stick-handling, passing and catching and shooting. The approximately 20 boys that comprised the Penguins' roster, all of whom had only six weeks of playing experience, benefitted from the instruction of both seasoned coaching veterans.
"It was clear to me right from the get-go that these young men were eager to play and eager to learn about the sport," the former Georgetown All-American and Major League Lacrosse player, Urick, said. "It was a pleasure working with them. We had a lot of fun, and I hope they left with a deeper appreciation for lacrosse."
Walls, a magnet school that draws students from throughout the city, is just the second District of Columbia Interscholastic Athletic Association member to field a boys lacrosse team. They are led by head coach Mike Collins, who also volunteers at WINNERS Lacrosse which uses the sport to teach life lessons to underserved youth in the city.
Urick, who is in the process of forming a start-up lacrosse program at University of the District of Columbia set to begin play in Spring 2014, said he is encouraged by the sport's growth throughout the District of Columbia, and particularly at Walls.
"I think Walls is a tremendous school with highly-motivated students and an excellent coach to get the program up-and-running," Urick said. "These student-athletes understand the concepts of the game, and they are only going to get better."
