Explosive Second Half Lead’s to Firebird Home Opener Victory; Colon Scores 30

Washington, DC- The University of the District of Columbia's Men's basketball team defeated Chestnut Hill in their first home game of the season to bring their record to 2-1. Sophomore Jaunye Colon erupted with 30 points to lead his team to a 78-72 victory.

Colon led the Firebirds with 30 points, six rebounds and four steals. He was a perfect 5-5 at the free throw line and went 5-10 at the three-point line. After being outscored 38-30 in the first half the Firebirds came back to outscore the Griffins 48-34.

It was a slow start for the Firebirds as they trailed behind the Griffins for most of the first half. Aaren Smith put the Firebirds on the board with a jump shot made 40 seconds into the game. He was followed up by a jump shot and a three-point shot made by Colon. The Griffins fought to take the lead at 16:10 which they rode all the way to half time, with the Firebirds trailing behind 38-30. 

UDC had a scoreless two minutes coming off half time which was broought to an end after Colon stepped to the Free throw line after being fouled at the three. Cheyenne Nettleton would give UDC their first lead of the half sending a three pointer in the net just shy of the 13-minute mark. Chestnut hill managed to regain and keep the lead for the next nine minutes of the game, which was decimated after a jump shot by Quran Dublin tied the game. He then followed up with a three-pointer to give the firebirds the lead, which they rode out to until the end. 

Senior Guard Zachary Olukanni and Senior Forward Consolo Adams also contributed double digit numbers to the Firebirds win. Olukanni finished with 13 points and seven rebounds while Adams finished with 10 points, going a perfect 4-4 at the free throw line. 

The Griffins had six players put-up double-digit numbers. They were led by Juston Bailey who had 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists.
