Firebirds Scorch Rivals for a 94-76 Victory

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia men's basketball team earned a 94-76 win vs. LIU Post in East Coast Conference play Wednesday evening at UDC Gym.

The Firebirds (8-6) started the game slow and trailed for the first five minutes of the game, but once the Firebirds led they would hold the lead for the remaining 35 minutes.

The Pioneers (0-12) were led by Alonzo Ortiz-Traylor who finished with a double-double of 38 points and 10 rebounds.

Senior guard Kevin Cox was on fire scoring 19 points in the first half. He would finish with a team-high 24 points and a career best six three pointers to go with six rebounds. Senior guard Danny Shand flirted with a triple double finishing an all-around game with 12 points, nine rebounds, and six assists from the bench.

Senior point guard Quadire Truesdale was on the brink of a double-double as he facilitated the offense with 11 assists and came down with eight rebounds. Junior forward Aaren Smith and Junior guard Kerry Kirkwood both pulled down six rebounds as well as scoring 19 (Smith) and 14 (Kirkwood) points.

LIU Post brought the led  to to 11 points at 78-67 after a three-pointer from Jamal David before two free throws by Junior guard Aaren Smith started a 11-0 run for the Firebirds. UDC led the game in rebounds (46-34), bench points (25-7), assists (25-17) and points off turnovers (13-10).

The Firebirds will return to action at home on Saturday, January 12th when they host conference foe NYIT. Tip-off is at 3 p.m.
