Firebirds Lose Hard Fought Contest to West Georgia, 68-71

Carrollton, GA: January 8, 2011-- In another hard fought, close contest, the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Men's Basketball Team fell to the University of West Georgia Wolves, 71-68, today at the Coliseum in Carrollton, Georgia.  Junior guard Brandon Herbert (Sociology- Baltimore, MD) led the Firebirds scoring with 15 points and 3 rebounds as they fell to the Wolves in the final 10 seconds of the game on two free-throws by Gavin Fields.

UDC trailed by 1 (38-37) at the end of the first half on 48 percent (15-31) shooting from the field. Second half Firebirds field goal shooting dropped off to 29 percent (11-38), but they made 80 percent (8-10) of their free-throws as they scored 31 points in the half. The Firebirds shot 38 percent (26-69) from the field for the game, 25 percent (6-24) from three-point range and 67 percent (10-15) from the charity stripe.

The Wolves shot 47 percent (23-49) from the field for the game, 46 percent (5-11) from beyond the arc and 71 percent ( 20-28) from the charity stripe.

In addition to Herbert, also scoring in double digits for the Firebirds were junior guard Nigel Munson (Graphic Design-Washington, DC), with 14 points, and 3 rebounds, senior guard Tim Ellison (TV Broadcasting-Alexandria, VA) with 13 points, 4 rebounds, and freshman forward Ziad Ashmawy ( Political Science- Cairo, Egypt) with 12 points and 9 rebounds.

Da'Ron Sims scored a game-high 17 points for the Wolves and teammates Justin Cummings added 12 points, while Gavin Field contributed 11 points as they provided the leadership for the Wolves.

The Firebirds (2-11) next game will be in Meisenheimer, North Carolina against Pfeiffer University on January 12.
