Mens Basketball Team Shows Great Academic Results

The Universitys Mens Basketball team has proven to be not only winner on the court, but also in the classroom. The Firebirds, who surged to an impressive 20-9 record this year, has accumulated a team grade point average of 2.86 for the spring of 2007 semester.
UDC Basketball Players Garner ALL-ICAA Recognition

Washington, DC---- Three University of the District of Columbia basketball players have been selected to the All-Independent College Athletic Associations (ICAA) Division II teams. Ashley Alexander, a member of the UDC Lady Firebirds Basketball Team was named to the All-ICAA Division II Womens 2nd Team, while Charlie Smallwood and Willie Shaw were named to the All-ICAA Mens 2nd and 3rd Teams, respectively. Selection to All-ICAA Teams is the highest recognition accorded by independent schools to players who had stand out performances on the court during a particular season.
Firebirds Miss Tournament Selection

WASHINGTON, DC: MARCH 4, 2007The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds did not receive the coveted invitation to the 2007 NCAA Division II Basketball Championship Tournament. UDC is not in a conference, therefore the only way they could have received a bid was to have been highly ranked in the East NCAA Region.

WASHINGTON, DC: MARCH 1, 2007Former UDC Head Mens Basketball Coach Wil Jones led the 1982 NCAA Division II National Basketball Champion University of the District of Columbia Firebirds into the UDC Windows Lounge for a reception, and later into the gymnasium for the basketball game between UDC and Columbia Union College, and in so doing re-ignited fond memories of days and times gone by. The Team had been invited back to the campus to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their winning the 1982 Championship.

WASHINGTON, DC: MARCH 1, 2007The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Basketball Team celebrated two important milestones tonight, first defeating the Columbia Union Pioneers 93-83, to give Head Mens Basketball Coach Julius L. Smith, Jr., his first 20 game season win. They also observed the 25th anniversary of the 1982 UDC Firebirds NCAA Division II National Basketball Championship by welcoming the Team back to the campus and presenting them with commemorative plaques during half-time festivities.

FORT MYERS, FL: FEBRUARY 24, 2007--- The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds opened the first round of the Independent Schools Tournament with a 76-62 win over the Palm Beach Atlantic University Sailfish today in Fort Myers, Florida. Junior guard Frank Petersen (Silver Spring, MD) led the Firebirds to the win with 18 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals, on 6-9 shooting.

KUTZTOWN, PA: FEBRUARY 21, 2007The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds defeated the Kutztown University Golden Bears, 84-81, in an exciting, down to the wire, overtime game tonight in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. With the score tied at 81, and 1 second remaining in overtime, junior guard Charlie Smallwood (Palmer Park, MD) hit a three point shot to win the game for the Firebirds.

WASHINGTON, D.C.: FEBRUARY 19, 2007Junior guard Frank Petersen (Silver Spring, MD) and junior guard Charlie Smallwood (Palmer Park, MD) combined for 40 points (20 each) to lead the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds to a 87-79 defeat of the West Chester University Golden Rams at home tonight. The win enabled the Firebirds to sweep this years series with the Rams.

WASHINGTON, DC: FEBRUARY 14, 2007It was Valentines Day according to the calendar, and the love displayed by University of the District of Columbia Firebirds for the game of basketball was quite evident as they took apart Claflin Universitys Basketball Team in all categories tonight, defeating them 74-50, at home. Junior guard Charlie Smallwood (Palmer Park, MD) led the Firebirds to the win for the eighth time this season. Smallwood scored 22 points and grabbed 3 rebounds during the game. He is the teams overall scoring leader, averaging 16.5 points per game.

JOHNSTOWN, PA: FEBRUARY 10, 2007 In an exciting game, the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown Mountain Cats defeated the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds, 82-73, for their second win over the visiting Firebirds this season. Five Mountain Cats scored in double figures to give them the win, while Chris Gilliam provided the leadership with 24 points, eight rebounds, two assists and three steals.

Takoma Park, MD: February 3, 2007Junior guard Willie Shaw (Alexandria, VA) led the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds to an 86-77 win over the Columbia Union College Pioneers tonight in Takoma Park, Maryland, with a double-double and game high 28 points and 18 rebounds. This was the fourth time this season that Shaw has paced the Firebirds to victory.
