Three Firebirds Earn East Coast Conference Men’s Soccer All-Team Honors

West Babylon, NY- The University of the District of Columbia's Men's Soccer Team boasts three East Coast Conference All-Conference Third team honorees for the 2019 season.

Senior midfielder Jason Mayorga , senior forward Malik Thom and junior forward Vitor Gomes each earned Third Team All-Conference honors.

Gomes, in his first year as a Firebird, led the team with 25 points on 11 goals and three assists. His 11 goals tied for third in the conference.

Thom, in his final season as a Firebird, registered 22 points on eight goals and six assists. His eight goals tied for fifth in the conference and his six assists tied for fourth.

Mayorga was a crucial contributor to the Firebirds Midfield that lead to four big ECC wins two of which were shut outs.

UDC finished the season with a 7-11, 4-4 ECC record. Their season came to a close after a tough loss from the No.1 seed Mercy College bashed their chances of a post season.

"I really enjoyed working with the players this season," said Head Coach Matthew Thompson. "They worked extremely hard and although they didn't get what they deserved, a playoff berth, they can be proud of their efforts. The team chemistry was very good and that is something that will continue into the spring and hopefully next season. We were a little unfortunate with some injuries early on in the season and some suspensions that hurt us in big games. We competed well against the top teams and did well to turn the season around from a 1-6 start. We took it to the last game of the season and with a little more quality, could have made the playoffs. Excited for the spring and looking forward to 2020 where I think we will compete at a higher level and look to get back to post season play."
